Most common questions about Clinical Hypnotherapy
- What is Hypnosis?
Hypnosis is a state of focused attention, heightened suggestibility, and deep relaxation and during this state, individuals may be more open to suggestions. Opposite to common misconceptions, hypnosis is not a form of sleep; instead, it involves a heightened state of awareness. The purpose of hypnosis can vary, ranging from relaxation and stress reduction to addressing specific issues.
In the relaxed state known as hypnosis, we can communicate directly with the unconscious mind enabling changes to occur naturally and easily.
When in a hypnotic state you can talk, hear, feel, taste and smell as all five senses are still normal and active. Most importantly the unconscious mind is strong, focused as well as always in control and will only follow suggestions or directions that are congruent with you.
In a therapeutic setting, the clinical hypnotherapist/practitioner will use hypnosis to help individuals make positive changes in their thoughts, feelings, or behaviours. It is important to note that the effectiveness of hypnosis can vary from person to person, and not everyone is equally susceptible to hypnotic suggestions. Additionally, individuals under hypnosis cannot be made to do something against their will.
It’s crucial for hypnosis to be conducted by a trained and qualified professional to ensure its safe and ethical use.
Hypnosis has been used to address conditions such as pain management, anxiety, phobias, and habit disorders. Today the use of hypnosis is seen in medicine, dentistry, law enforcement, professional sport, education, birthing and more.

Most people can be hypnotised. It is the experience itself that is different for each person. Whether they go deep into trance quickly or more slowly, there is no right or wrong way. Hypnosis is a safe, relaxing, and enjoyable experience.
- What you may experience during and after Hypnosis
During hypnosis people have compared it to the feeling you get when you go on holidays or relax by the pool, calm and safe. Whilst there are many levels of hypnosis and everyone experiences them differently relaxation will be felt in the body and in the mind. Once the mind is calm the chatter slows, stops and all goes quiet. Most people are able to release any tensions and allow themselves to just go with it and relax feeling really comfortable.
